jmakewhatis [-a | -append] [-h | -help] [-i | -indent column] [-n | -name name] [-o | -outfile file] [-v | -verbose] [directories ...]

解説

jmakewhatis はフォーマットされていないマニュアルページから名称と短い解説を抽出し、 whatis(1) データベースを作成します。 jmakewhatis コマンドはgzipされたマニュアルページを読むことができます。 directory は、 ( man.+ という名前の) マニュアルページサブディレクトリを持つディレクトリの名前です。 コロンは空白と同様に扱われますので、 jmakewhatis $MANPATH や jmakewhatis `manpath` も許されます。 日本語マニュアルページサブディレクトリを持つディレクトリを directory に指定するときには、環境変数 LC_CTYPE か LANG を ja_JP.EUC に設定しておく必要があります。

オプション

-a -, -append
  アペンドモード。 whatis データベースの古いエントリを削除しません。 注意: 新しくできたデータベースは重複行がないようにソートされます。 また、古いエントリが妥当であるかはチェックしません。
-h -, -help
  使用可能なオプションを表示し、終了します。
-i -, -indent column
  解説の文字列の長さを column にします (デフォルトは 24 です) 。
-o -, -outfile file
  dirname/whatis の代わりに全ての出力を file に書き込みます。
-n -, -name name
  whatis の代わりに name を使用します。
-v -, -verbose
  多くの警告を (標準エラー出力に対して) 出力します。 パースした全てのマニュアルに対して次の 1 文字を表示します: ‘.amp;’ は圧縮されていないページ、 ‘*’ は圧縮されているページ、 ‘+’ はリンクをそれぞれ表します。

使用例

jmakewhatis $MANPATH

ユーザの $MANPATH にある全てのディレクトリに対して whatis データベースを作成します。

jmakewhatis -outfile /tmp/mywhatis /usr/share/man/ja $HOME/man

whatis データベース /tmp/mywhatis を作成します。 ディレクトリは /usr/share/man/ja と $HOME/man を見ます。 /usr/share/man/ja/whatis および $HOME/man/whatis は作成しません。

jmakewhatis -name windex $HOME/man

whatis の代わりに jwhatis データベース windex を作成します。 おそらく Solaris で有効です。

歴史

このオリジナルの makewhatis コマンドは FreeBSD 2.1 から登場しました。 日本語版の jmakewhatis コマンドは FreeBSD 2.2 から ports/packages として登場しました。
